In 1770 Robert Bagnall, an Englishman and a Catholic from Staffordshire, arrived in Glasgow. His trade was pottery. Nine years after his arrival in Glasgow, the Gordon Riots erupted and Robert Bagnall's house, shop and equipment were burned out. His house had been a clandestine centre for Catholic worship. From Glasgow, Robert Bagnall came to East Lothian in 1780. He set up the Westpans Pottery near Levenhall. According to the Statistical History of Scotland Volume 16 of 1795, this Westpans Pottery was situated 'in a garden where three score years ago stood the Mansion House of Westpans, then possessed by a family of the name of Joice, now extinct, whose estate was what is now called Drummore in the Parish of Prestonpans.'
In 1792 Robert Bagnall was declared bankrupt. It is interesting to note that the same Robert Bagnall had a son Thomas Peter Bagnall who was ordained a Catholic Priest in 1795. He never lived at Westpans as the family left the area in 1792 after his father's bankruptcy. It is known that the Bagnall's house in Glasgow was a Mass Centre. We can only surmise that his house at Westpans also served the same purpose. Father Bagnall is buried in the cemetery at Sweetheart Abbey, New Abbey, Kirkcudbright which is near Dumfries.
West Pans Pottery, West Pans (1746-1817)
Cistercian monks of Newbattle settled in West Pans and probably produced pottery from around 1154, though the first record of clay winning appears in 1754, shortly before William Littler arrived in Prestonpans to launch Scotland's porcelain industry. Littler's wares have a 'novelty' and 'one-off' nature which depended heavily on aristocratic patronage. When this declined, mid-eighteenth century, Littler's ceased trading. Robert Bagnall reopened West Pans in 1784 as a creamware pottery until 1792. Various subsequent owners continued production until final closure in 1817.
Gordon's Pottery, Bankfoot (1772-1842)
In 1772, George Gordon began pottery production at Morison's Haven, providing finance and a manager in Rowland Bagnall. In 1774, Gordon personally moved into the pottery with his two sons. The Gordons took over Bankfoot in 1795 and in the early nineteenth century produced a wide variety of good quality domestic earthenware. After suffering substantial losses on the collapse of the East Lothian Bank in 1810, the Gordons went into decline. When the owner of Prestongrange estate began consolidating his lands, he accused Gordon of neglecting buildings, wrongly claiming land, and taking clay intended for bricks and planning a pottery without permission. Litigation concluded in 1836 with Gordon's removal from Morison's Haven. The Gordons continued at Rope Walk, Kirk Street and Bankfoot until sequestration in 1842.
